The NYT will no longer be charging for access to some parts of its site. While I look forward to being able to read the former premium content effective mid-night tonight, I’m wondering about the business decision. From research I know that most magazines and newspapers increasingly rely on ad revenue and almost give away their product for the sake of reaching the largest possible audience. It’s interesting to see a company which had previously snubbed this approach to fall back to it 2 years to the day after trying to charge for content - further proof that the first penny is the hardest penny on the web.
